Sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) is a salt of composition Na6[(PO3)6. Sodium hexametaphosphate is an inorganic polyphosphate salt commonly used as a corrosion inhibitor, emulsifying agent and as a tooth whitening agent in dentifrice formulations. Sodium Hexametaphosphate (SHMP) is a mixture of polymeric Metaphosphates of which the Hexamer is one. It is prepared by heating Monosodium Orthophosphate until it starts melting and the process is followed by rapid cooling.
